Identifying the Problem: One of the common challenges
students face in learning English is pronunciation, particularly when it comes
to listening and speaking skills. Teachers often emphasize the importance of
correct pronunciation, but many students struggle to internalize and practice
these skills in a practical, engaging way. Traditional methods of teaching
pronunciation can be repetitive and ineffective, especially in large classroom
settings where individualized attention is limited. This project addresses the
need for a more interactive, enjoyable way to help students improve their
pronunciation and phonological awareness through a mobile game.
Target Population: Our project is designed for students in both
primary (ages 7-11) and early secondary (ages 12-15) education. These age
groups are particularly receptive to interactive learning methods and enjoy
using technology for educational purposes. By introducing a mobile game for
pronunciation practice, we hope to engage these students with age-appropriate
content and help them practice English in a fun and less intimidating
environment. The game will be simple enough for younger students, while also
offering challenges to keep older students engaged.
English Level: The game could be primarily designed for
students at an A1 to A2 level of English proficiency; it will focus on
foundational aspects of pronunciation and basic conversational skills. Students
at this level often have difficulty distinguishing between similar sounds,
understanding the rhythm and stress of English, and producing accurate speech. In
this frame, the game will focus on minimal pairs, pronunciation drills, and
listening exercises to help students at these levels gain confidence in their
speaking and listening abilities.
Proposed Tools: For this project, we envision a fun and exploratory mobile game that engages students in pronunciation practice without feeling rigid or repetitive. Instead of traditional quiz-based tools, we propose a game where students navigate different scenarios, such as exploring a virtual town, solving puzzles, or completing missions, all while practicing their English pronunciation. The game would integrate challenges like identifying minimal pairs, mimicking native pronunciation, or selecting the correct word based on pronunciation clues. To create this, we could explore user-friendly platforms like GameSalad or Construct, which allow for simple game development. These tools will enable us to design interactive experiences that are fun, dynamic, and effective in improving students' pronunciation skills while being accessible for our skill level.
